Pontiac Repair: bearing problem?, pontiac grand prix, pontiac grand prix gt

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2000 pontiac grand prix gt 3.8 ltrs v6 automatic and it sounds like a bearing problem, you can hear the noise now while driving, how much will this cost me when fixed in a shop with labour and how long before I can get this fixed (single mom with two children)

ANSWER: Hi there:

well it depends If it is a wheel bearing which is common on these cars. figure an hours labor plus the part you can buy really cheap wheel bearing down here in the states for less then $75.00 but you get what you pay for or get a genuine replacement part for $3-400. Your choice. you just need to find a repair shop that will buy install a "cheap" part and the repair is not all that bad.

QUESTION: Thank you for your reply.  I am in Canada, Ontario actually. It probably is a wheel bearing problem, shop rates here are as high as $40.00 and more, so it is only an hour labour but another question is how long can it last until I get it fixed and what can happen cause I many times have my children with me.

Answer
$40.00 an hour is cheap. Out rate down here is 98.00 an hour. Id depends on how bad it is. usually they go really bad in a hurry. the louder the noise the worse the ebaring is getting. they get so bad that the wheel is actually loose on the car! so it's best to get it fixed sooner rather then later. You can look on E-bay to get a base line for a price of the "cheap hubs" you may find a shop that will install a part suppled by you. You only need to know if the car has ABS brakes or not the hubs are different for ABS and non ABS.
