Pontiac Repair: speedometer guage, sppedo, pontiac grand am

i have a 1997 pontiac grand am se with a 2.4 litre engine and my speedometer guage at 40 mph drops off to 0 and stays there until i drop below 40 mph again. whats going on?

Does the car up and down shift through the gears correctly? If so the issie is not with the speed sensor. It is either with the output from the engine computer to the dash sppedo or the dash sppedo it's self. That is an odd problem. I can't say That I have seen that beore on one of those cars. without seeing it I can't say for sure what the issue is.
