Pontiac Repair: 1994 Pontiac Transport 3.8 liter, intake manifold gasket, vacuum leak

Question
I have this problem , I just bought this van , unemployed
for a year - I do not have the money to spend on the Service
Engine Soon light is on and the van will run at start up
just fine then once it warms up it starts to idle s rough -
that it feels like it will shake the whole van loose of all
it's parts and then I went to get some choke and throdel
body carb cleaner and replaced the air filter and sprayed
the cleaner in the hole of the carb - it had this weird
screen over it - but boy - that seemed to work - it ran good
for the next few days, then one morning  I went to go and it
warmed up and started to run rough again - if I gave it gas
to 1,100 rpm's it would smooth out but then to much idle -
but if I let it go it almost quits ! sprayed it again while
giving it gas to get inside the carb better and the next few
days it ran good again - what is it, to many parts on here
to figure it out and spend $ 100 plus per part to find it ?
can you help me ? Glen in Wisconsin

Answer
Hi Glen:
well it sound like it may have a vacuum leak somewhere spraying around with carb cleaner and it runs better means the unmetered air is getting into thye engine and when you spark it with the cleaner it's getting sucked into the engine and smoothing out the idle. see when it runs better where you spary it if the is a vacuum line near by it may the the cause. If there is no line near it it may be the intake manifold gasket leaking air. Your on the right track it's just a matter of where it is. Good luck :)
