Pontiac Repair: 1990 Grand Prix ignition cylinder, turn signal switch, steering wheel puller

Question
QUESTION: How do I replace the key ignition cylinder on a 1990 Grand
Prix, Quad 4, square type steering column, automatic on
column.  Thank you.

ANSWER: Hi Gary:

That is a unique steering column on that car compaird to the round ones. You will need a steering wheel puller and a pivot pin puller and a lock plate puller to take the column apart. The steering wheel has to come off then the lock plate I belive is next in that one. Forgive me It's been years since I had one a part. then you need to take the Pivot plat off for the tilt and the lock cylinder is under that. The turn signal switch has to come off as well before you get to the lock cylinder. The cylinder just has 1 bolt that holds it into the column. Sorry if It's a bit choppy as to the reoair but like I said it has been years since I have even worked on this vintage grand prix.. Good luck :)

QUESTION: I have replaced the cylinder on the round type column before
without pivot pins.  If you could supply any details on the
pivot plate or pin removal it would be most useful.  Thanks!

Answer
There is a retainer that holds the spring for the pivot in Use a Phillips scre driver to push in the retauner and turn it it will unlaod the spring. take it out then use the pin puller to pull the pins out. You shou,d be able to rent all of these tools at a big box auto parts store.
