Pontiac Repair: 1998 Bonneville ssei, crankshaft position sensor, fuel pressure regulator

Question
My Bonneville all of a sudden developed a problem. While driving at basically any speed, it will cut off and on or hesitates ocassionally. It has died on me when I took off from a light but it is usually hiway driving that I notice it more. Could the egr be causing this? I got several codes when I had it hooked up to check the check engine light I was getting most of which pointed out the egr.

Answer
Hi Joe:

A sticking ERG valve can ause a stall at idle but not a cruising speeds. You may have more then one issue here. As these engines get older they start to use engine oil and that creates carbon and the carbon makes the valve stick and not close or when it's commanded on it sticks close and then pops open all the sudden instead of a garadual apply and that can cause a stall. The most likley cause for a "cut out" stall would be an ignition system failure like a crankshaft position sensor. Another thing to look at is a fuel pressure regulator when the engine is running pull the vacuum hose off the pressure regulator and see if there is any raw gas comming out of the port where the hose attaches. if so the regulator is bad. Good luck :)
