Pontiac Repair: misfire; vacuum leak, chevron techron fuel system, mass air sensor

Question
i have a 98 grand prix with a 3.1 litre engine. i had it scanned at auto zone and the code that popped up was P0300 and P0102 i really need the help and will greatly appreciate any help from someone with more experience than myself

Answer
Hi Dustin:

Well first address the P0300 which is a random misfire code. these engines usually have bad spark plug wires on the tops of the ignition coild take each wire off 1 at a time and see if any of them look burnt or rusted. If so replace the wire set and any coil that shows either of the forementioned, As for the p0102 hat is odd for this engine. you can use some carb cleaner and spark around any of the vacuum lines or ports and see if the engine rpm's pick up if so you found your leak. Look around the PCV valve gromet. Make sure this has a Delco pcv Valve and not a fits all. look the the pcv hose where it goes into the top of the engine. Look at the breather tube where it pushes into the rubber hose between the mass air sensor and the engeine and wher it goes into the rera valve cover. make sure the sensor is in the hose the correct way. there is an arrow stamped in the platic the arrow should face the engine not the air cleaner. that is where I would start looking. Lastly you can try a bottle or 2 of Chevron Techron fuel system cleaner in the gas tank. Follow the directions on the back of the bottle.

Good luck :)
