Pontiac Repair: Engine swap, mileage engine, pontiac grand am

Question
Dear Sir,

This question pertains to a 1999 Pontiac Grand AM 3.4L engine.

I have been trying to find out what, if any, is the difference between a California engine and a 49 state engine.  My wife spun a rod bearing in her engine and I have been trying to find a used replacement engine.  I am getting wildly conflicting information concerning this engine.

The car does have a California sticker in the engine compartment.  We live in Pennsylvania if that makes a difference.
One person tells me I cannot use a 49 state engine and another person tells me there is no difference.  If there is a difference, can I swap components from the old engine to the new engine or are there differences within the engine?

Also, I found a local low mileage engine that is from a 2001 49 state car, will it fit and not cause any problems installing it in a 1999 California stickered car?

Thank you in advance.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

Jay

Answer
Hey Jay:

I'm not a parts person so I have No idea what makes a 49 states engine different then a CA engine. At least on a V6 the 4 cylinder there was a ERG engine and a NON EGR engine and the EGR engine was like NY CA and MA and the other states didn't have it.. Dumb, the smog out the tail pipe effect other states as well not just where it's running.... There has to be some kind of different emissions on the engine in a CA engine. Try this place www.wilbertsinc.com. we get good used quality parts from them all the time. They are outside of Rochester NY. I didn't tell you this but if you found another 3.4 of the same year just strip off all the manifolds and slap them onto the used engine and it should be fine. Use all your emissions stuff from the bad engine on the used motor you find. There "shouldn't" be any difference in the block that I can thing of. but give this place a shout and see what they say. Good luck :)
