Pontiac Repair: Fuel Guage, fuel system treatment, buick dealer

Question
The fuel gage on my 2001 Grand-Am 3.1 has become erratic.  It drifts around and recently I ran out of fuel with 1/4 tank showing on the gage.  I am going to assume the sending unit in the tank must be replaced but I'm being told I must replace the entire pump/sending unit/strainer as a unit for $700.00.  Question, can the sending unit be replaced without the pump and if so, do you know of anyone who sells the sending units?

Answer
Hey Colin:

Your right o nas to what need to be replaced and yes the sending uning can be replaced and you don't need the complete fuel pump assembly. Any GM dealer should have this part except for a caddy/Buick dealer that same part went into just about every gm car line olds/chevy/pontiac all had that body style car. Do not go aftermarket for this part get a genuine GM part. while your in ther get a fuel filetr as well and replace that and also get a bottle of fuel system treatment fuel levl protectant. it's in a black bottle with a long skinny neck. The Canada part # is different then the one here in the US but they will know what you need. Use that treatment every 6 month or so it works great. The additives in the gasoline eat the level sensor up. try a different barnd of fule from now on only 87 octane.. good luck :)
