Pontiac Repair: Multifunction Switch, turn signal switch, pontiac grand prix

Question
Mr. Puccio,

I have a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix and I have been having problems with my brake lights, turn signals and automatic locks. About a year ago I went to press the hazard switch on the steering column and smoke poured out of the cracks. I've had everything checked out and discovered that the problem with the lights is due to a burnt up multifunction switch, but I was wondering if this switch has any connection to my door locks? Every time gas/brake the doors lock/unlock.
Is this a common problem for Pontiacs? Is the replacement of a multifunction switch simple enough for a car owner to do the repair?

Thank you so very much for your time!
Mare

Answer
Hi there:

The turn signal switch is a pretty straight forwards job but you have to remove the steering wheel to do this and the drivers air bag is in there. I WOULD NOT TELL A DO IT YOUR SELFER TO DO this job. Just because of that... The door locks and not related to that you could have someythin as simple as a bad door lock switch where the contcats are touching when you brake and accelerate. Or it could be a body control module issue where the module is bad  or the module is gettin a bad signal from one of the door lock switches or even from the keyless entry receiver.. With out seeing that it's hard to say what the issue is with it.. Hope that helps you out.

Good luck :)
