Pontiac Repair: P1404 and P404 ODB II codes, odb ii codes, pontiac firebird

I have a 2001 Pontiac Firebird v6 3800. I am receiving a Check Engine light. I have read the code with a scanner and and cleared it several times. The code is always P1404 or P404. Should I replace the EGR valve or is there something else that I can do?

Hi Mike.

The most likley cause is a bad valve BUT that is an expensive guess. what you need is an actaul scan tool to see what the valve position is when the key is on and the engine off. with a scan tool you can command the valve open and closed and see what the valve does. You could have a wiring issue between the engine computer and the valve. Not likley but possible. 8 out of 10 times it's the valve the other 20% is wiring issues and possibly a bad engine computer but that is NOT very liklely.
