Pontiac Repair: top wont go down, rear view mirror, pontiac dealership

Question
QUESTION: 07 Pontiac-G gt convertible top will not go down. can hear motor running but top doesn't to release

ANSWER: Hey Joe:

well It's hard to say for sure what the issue here is with out seeing it but I have a good guess that one of the rod(s) that unlatch the roof at the header above the windshield has bent and that's why it will not open. Pretty common for that car. Is it's less then 3 years old and less then 36,000 miles it's a warranty repair if not then it's costly to fix. Good luck :)

QUESTION: Tood, thanks again for such a quick response.  Now that I have unlocked the top . how do I go about removing the bent rod or rods wihtout doing any damage.   Joe

Answer
you have to take the headliner off the roof from the inside and you will see which rod is bent it will be pushed right up against the roof. It it replaced from the inside. It's really not a job for the do it your selfer due to the fact the top has to be open partally to gain access to the latch the rod is part of and after 2 minutes the system drops pressure and the top will come down and HURT YOU! there is a special tool that needs to be used to hold the top open and not allow it to come crashing down on you and HURTING YOU or damaging the car's body or roof... There is a special proceedure too to adjust the rids so they don'r bend again and the top closes propelry. There is specialized training you need to do this job #1 right and #2 so you don't get hurt doing it.
