Pontiac Repair: 93 6rand Prix shift cable adjustment, shift cable, heat cycles

Question
Hello, I have a '93 6rand Prix w/ a/t that needs the linkage/shift cable adjusted. Before I can do this, I need to pull up the "lock button" on the shift cable. My concern is, its plastic (looks like 1/2" wide snap ring). What is the correct way/ tool to do this, without damaging it, or causing it to break?

Answer
Hi Danielle:

There is no special tool for the job. I use a 90 degree bent pick or yout could use a cotter key removal tool whick looks like an all with a hook on the end of it.. being that it's 17 years old even if your gentlr with it it may have enough heat cycles into it that it will break anyways it's a gamle your going to have to take I guess.. just be GENTLE.. good luck :)
