Pontiac Repair: 94 Firebird, scan tool, position sensor

Question
I have a 94 Firebird manual transmission and the 3.4 V6. It will start and run fine, smooth idle, doesn't miss, or anything for as long as you leave it running, but if you shut it off, and try to restart it, it backfires and misses, if it even does that... If you wait an hour or so it will start and be fine.

Answer
Hi chris:

well It soulds like it's an ignition system problem or a fuel injector issue. You could ahve injectors taht are leaking into then engine when you shut the car off. when you start it back uop does it billow black smoke out the tail pipe? has fuel mialge dropped off alot recently? As far as the igniton system you could have a bad ignition coil this car has 3 of them. take the wires off the coils 1 by 1 and see if any of the wires are burnt or rotted/rust up on the tops of the coils.. You could have an ignition module that when it has a hot soak it will not run the coils properly.. same thing would be for the crank position sensor for the ignition system.. has any service engine soon light come on? those are the things I would look at first.. being that this is an fuel injected engine ther is not much thata do it your selfer can do to fix these you need a true scan tool to see what is going on with the engien controls. Good luck :)
