Pontiac Repair: rear defrost relay?, head programmer, hvac control


Question
i have a '98 bonneville se (v6). the other day i went to start it and the battery was dead, long story short the Rear defrost is staying on even with the car off and the key out ect.. i cheched the fuse and its good so i went for the relay, i found the correct location under the dash passenger side and with the stcker on the panel i figured out the correct position for the relay AND ITS NOT THERE!. i dont know why its even working without it let alone staying on 24-7. so where do i go next?!?

Hey Tim:

This is a strange one. first off on the relay block it's the 3'rd one down on the left side of that block. You may not have the right one? ? I attached the wiring diagram to this answer If the rlay were stuck on then yes it could be on all the time. If there was an isssue with the HVAC control head/programmer it could keep the relay on all the time onlt with the key on once the key is off the control side of the relay looses it's power so it's not a control head issue It's either you have the wrong relay or somewhere the wiring for the defogger is shorted to battery power. It's a matter of finding out where.. sorry I can't be of more help but with the aid of the diagarms you should be able to figure it out I hope.. It's hard to tell you what the issue is without seeing it.. Good luck :)
