Pontiac Repair: trans sport computer placement, ac delco, blown fuse

Question
I am trying to pull the engine codes off my 96 montana trans sport computer but when i plug in my scanner i get no connection. I have checked all the wires leading to the plug but all look good. is there a way to go right to the computer and plug in, and if so, where is the computer located?
 Thanks

Answer
Hi Rob:

well it depends on the type of scan tool you have not all scan tools or code readers are compatable with all cars and trucks. It may not be an issue with the van it may be the code reader you have.. I belive back in that model year there was an issue with "genaric" scan tools and code readers working on that van. That was the first year for OBD2 and things are a bit muddy for scanners for a few years.. I belive there was a software update on the 96 trasnport for genaric scan tools to then work on these vans..You need to have that update done at a dealership or an AC Delco repair shop the issue is when they update the software in the computer it will wipe out any trouble codes stored in the computer. Is the scan tool you have self powered or does it use the power from the data link in the van? if so it could have a blown fuse in the van usually the cigar lighter or csty. lamps are the same fuse and the data link connetor. Good luck :)
