Pontiac Repair: 93 Pontiac Grand Am GT, egr valve, emission cars

Question
QUESTION: We have a 93 Grand Am GT. It has a 3.3 liter, 6 cylinder engine. It failed emission inspection with a NOx reading of 3021 low speed and 3494 high speed. My mechanic says its the egr valve, which he says is electronic. I've also been told that the 3.3 doesn't have an egr valve. I can't find one if it does. What say you.

ANSWER: Hey Don:

well I see that you are from Canada. it depends on the emission system on the car. In the states California emission would have an EGR valve no california may not. I don't know about in Canada. If it does have an EGR valve on it it would be on the back side of the engine by the fire wall and it would be electrically controlled it would have a signe connector on it and it would have what looks like 3 solenoids on it. it will have a metal tube that runs from the exhaust manifold u ptot the valve. if it has it tit could be sticking.. If not equipped with one the catalitic converter can be your cause.. Good luck :)

QUESTION: Hi Todd,

Thanks for responding to my question. Where did you get that I'm in Canada? I'm in Dallas, Tx. Will this change your answer?

Answer
It showed up on my end of the answer is said location "canada"

No it will not chnage it.. If your not the original owner the car may have come from California originally or another state. depending on where it came from is what the emission system is on the car actually for a while California emission cars were also sold in NY amd MA.So some have them and some do not it's confusing I knonw. But back to your original question if it does have the valve the valve could be plugged with carbon ot the trasnfer tube from the valve back into the engine. If it is not equipped then I would suspect a bad catalitic converter.
