Pontiac Repair: 2000 Pontiac Grand Am GT 3.4 Auto, egr valve, software glitch

Service Engine Light came on code p1404 egr valve but reset itself. Came on again but no code aftering checking it 2 times with different scanners but reset itself. Now when vehicle warms up service and check engine light come on. Can you please advice? Thank You, Gary Watson.

Hey Gary:

that code is set for 2 reasons on that car either a EGR valve failure or a software glitch in the engine computer. Most of the time it's a software glitch more so then the valve being bad. On some of these cars there was a software update to repair the glitch. If you actually have a scan tool and not a code reader take a look at the EGR valve pintel position if with the key on engine off it shows the valve open anywhere between 9-12% It's a software issue and not the valve that is the issue. You need to goto a AC Delco repair shop or any GM dealer top have the software reprogrammed in the engine computer That will charge you anywhere from an hour to 2 hours to repair it. depending on if they charge you to diagnose it or not.
