Pontiac Repair: 1995 Pontiac Bonneville 3.8L, crankshaft position sensor, crank sensor

Question
1995 pontiac bonneville (not super) 3.8L  -  Turn engine on and start to put gas to the engine and every now and then it will start to hesitate beeb and cut off wait a minute and then it would run fine but then get down the road at about 55 - 65 mph and the stops and no indication on the gauges or even a beeb.  put to the side of the road and wait about 5 minutes and it will start right back up and go for days without a problem.......what do you suggest.....

Answer
Hi Bruce:

Well your going to have to see what the engine is missing when it quits running. if you can duplicate it just running in your driveway that would be great instead of waiting for it to die on the road which is dangerous! If you can duplicate it just ideling in park then when it dies check to see if it has fuel pressure it should be between 40-44PSI give or take a bit but not low like 20 PSI. Check to see if you have spark on all 6 plugs. you can get a cheap spark checker at the car parts store. My guess is your loosing spark due to either a crankshaft position sensor or a ignition module. Of the 2 the crank sensor is more common to go bad and head plays a big role in them quiting. once they cool down they will start up and run untill they heat up again. Good luck :)
