QUESTION: 2.4 L , yes it does fluctuate between 500 and a 1000 rpms before it dies. then there is black smoke coming out the tail pipe.

Answer
I would start by cleaning the trhottle plate and throttle plate bore. along with the idle control motor on the throttle body. disconnect the battery let it sit and reconnect the battery and then see what happens. Has any service engine soon lamp come on?
