any idea why the accelaraion bogs down while driving down the road. the idling is fine when stopped

when it bogs down does it feel like it's misfiring "not running on all 4 cyliners" or does it just lack power?
if could be something as simple as a plugged fuel filter or something more involved like a catalitic converter that is restricted or one of the engine load sencing sensors that is givving the engine computer false infomation and not allowing the engine to run properly under a heavy load. has any service engine soon lampm come on when it does this? If so have the car scanned for trouble codes at one of the big box auto parts stores they do it for free and at least then you would have a direction to go in.
