Pontiac Repair: 97 Grand prix windshield wipers, pontiac grand prix, arm assembly

Question
Hi Todd,
I have a 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix SE with a 3.8 engine.
The windshield wipers remain in a vertical position when they are swtched off. They will not park correctly in the down position. However, if while operating them you turn the ignition key off and the wipers happen to be in the down position, they will stay down as long as the key is off and the wiper control switch is in the on position. Turn the ignition key to the on position, turn the wiper switch off and they park in the up position. Can you suggest how I can repair this?
Thank-you,
Roc

Answer
Hi Roc:

The park arm assembly on this car is bad or the stop on the wiper transmission is bent. I belive the park arm is a dealer only part. I don't think you can get this aftermarket. Your better off getting the GM part anyways. there is process to follow to get the arm timed properly. what you do ir turn the wipers on the slowest delay and when the wipers stop in the delay turn the key off take the wiper transmission off the park arm and you line up the lever on the bottom park arm with the stop on the transmission. ther should be about a 7mm Gap betwwen the arm and the stop. Make sure the stop is not belt over or had a big groove worn in it. If so the the transmission has to be replaced. if the stop is okay then just reassemble the tranmsission and away you go. Good luck :)
