Pontiac Repair: 99 grand prix GT 3800v6, inner tie rod, car parts stores

Can I Change inner tie rod instead of changing the whole rack? I have rack but in doing the job i was wondering if this can be done with out taken out old rack. just wondering. And if possible a ew tricks to remove rack. The car is being worked on off of jack stands so any tricks would be great. Thank you for you time... Brian

Hi brian:

yes you can change it in the car. goto one of the big box car parts stores that have tool rentals and rent an "inner tie rod" removal tool it slides doen the tie rod and grabs the nut on the end of the rod and you can remove it i  the car. You just need to remove the boot first and the little plastic collar that goes over the nut has to be pushed off the nut towards the rack before removing the rod end. good luck :)
