Pontiac Repair: 2000 trans am, serpintine belt, pullys

Question
i have a loud squealing noise coming from the serpintine belt area. i can not tell if it is the alt. or one of the pullys. any hints on finding which one it is.

Answer
Hi rich.
Is it a squeal or a chirp. A chirp noise if from the belt it's self a squeal can be from an idler puller or tensioner You'll need a automotive stethoscope to narrow it down. You can also use a very long shank screwdriver and with the engine running use that as well. JUST BE CAREFUL NOT to get it stuck in the belt! Without hearing it it'as hard to say. if this is a V8 which i bet it is being a trans am it has 2 belts the scond one is for the a/c compressor it could be that belt and or tensioner as well.

good luck :)
