Pontiac Repair: grand prix stalling, 4 digits, engine control module

Question
I have a 91 3.1 grand prix that is built for a derby. It ran fine at first but now I run it through the yard and it stalls and its very hard to start. It smells like unburnt gas and is smoking black as it is trying to start. After I get it to start it stalls as soon as I put it into gear or miss fires and dies. I had a 3.1 that the fuel pump fell apart but its not that. If you have any idea let me know the derby is friday. Thanks you mike.

Answer
Hi Mike:

It can be any # of things but I would suspect and bad engine control module. If the last 4 digits of the part # stamped on the label are 7727 and it's black Thats the culprit. When it's running tap on the module with the handle of a screwdriver and see if it stalls. My guess it yes it will.  Good luck :)
