Pontiac Repair: 2000 Pontiac Trans Am WS6 whining noise while accelerating, pontiac trans am, moving down the road

Question
Hi, my car started making a weird whining sound when accelerating. It does it even when you rev the engine with the car in park. It's a 2000 WS6 350 with an auto transmission. Seems to be running fine, but the noise is bothering me.  :(

Does this sound like a power steering issue?

Answer
Hi Melinda:

well it could still be a transmission issue even know it's not moving down the road. PArts in the transmission are turning even know it's in park, But I doubt that the issue. I think your on the right track by thinking power steering make sure the fluis is full first and foremost. If it's low that is more than likley the end result of low fluid the noise. if the fluid is full then I'd move on to eithere an alternator or an idler puller for the belt. The belt can be removed and start the engine and see if the noise is gone. if so it's one of the accessories driven by the belt. One of the ones I mentioned. it could also be the a/c compressor that is driven by the belt as well. See if the noise chnages when you tun the a/c on and off if it changes DRASTICALLY then that is the noise. it may change slightly just due to the extra load on the engine that doens't mean it's the a/c compressor. Good luck :)
