Pontiac Repair: Pontiac Bonneville steering wheel, pontiac bonneville, steering wheel puller

Question
I need to replace the ignition tumbler in my 1990 Pontiac Bonneville but I can't figure out how to get the steering wheel off. I did remove the nut in the center. How can I do this?

Answer
Hi Dan:

You need a couple of special tools to do this job. You need a steering wheel puller and lock plate spring compressor in order to get down to the ignition lock cylinder. The puller will pull the steering wheel off the steering shaft and the lock plat spring compressor you need to compress the spring under the lock plate far enough to remove the retaining clip that holds the plate onto the steering shaft. once you do that you need to remove the turn siganl switch and the lock cylinder in under that. It's an in depth process. also before you remove the lock cylinder you need to remove the plastic clip with the wire contacts on it that is for the key in the cylinder buzzer switch. Hope that helps you out some??? Good luck :)
