Pontiac Repair: can you switch a 4 cylinder and a 6?, chevy malibu, pontiac grand am

Question
I have a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am SE and it just recently blew a rod and the rod blew a whole in the engine so we need a new engine. Currently the car has a 4 cylinder in it can I put in a 6 cylinder engine instead?

Answer
Hi Nadine:

Yes the car can handle a V6. But the way it sits now a V6 engine will not bolt up to and attach to the transmission that is in the car as well as all the electronics to the engien and the plumbing to the engine are all different. The best thing to do is to find another 4 cylinder engine from that exact same year and go with that. one out of a chevy maLibu or an olds will fit in that car as well. As long as it's from the same model year. The 4 cylinder engine is going to be harder to find then a V6. Good luck :)
