Pontiac Repair: 1990 Pontiac Firebird Ignition switch stuck, pontiac firebird, lock cylinder

Question
On my nieces 1990 Pontiac Firebird the ignition switch is stuck in the ON position. The only way to turn the car off is to disconnect the battery. You can use the key to restart the engine but it just won't go into the off position. What would be the possible cause of the ignition switch not turning off? Thanks!!

Answer
Hi Curt:

It can be a few things. t can be the ignition switch it's self is bad and it will not go back to the off positon. It can be the linakge inside the top of the column is binding up and not allowing the key to turn back off. Lastly it can be the lock cylinder it's self is binding, Maybe the key was bent and it was forced into the cylinder and is binding up? What ever it may be the column is going to have to be taken apart to find the source of the issue. Sorry I don't have a easy answer for you..
Good luck :)
