Pontiac Repair: oil in cylinders, check oil level, pontiac bonneville

Question
1998, Pontiac Bonneville, 3800 engine, I don't know type.
Turned key, engine fires, kicks, does not turn. Is not starter.  Mechanic pulled out plugs, oil comes pouring out, says I need new engine.  Does this sound correct?  My check engine light was on, my check oil level light came on recently.

Answer
Hi Sylvia:

I think what happned here was the engine hydro locked from coolant not oil. The cylinders are full of coolant. The upper intake manfold plenium failed and leaked coolant into the intake manifold and then rand down into the cylinder along with some oil that was in the intake. It's a common issue on these older 3800 engines when they get a lot of miles on them. The engine may not be junk. If it were me working on it I would take out all the plugs and turn the engine over by hand a few times then crank it with the starter then I would take the upper intake plenium off and see if indded the intake is full of coolant. If so then the upper plenium needs to be replaced and the engine should be okay. The oil will need to be changed after this as well. Good luck :)
