Pontiac Repair: 1999 Pontiac Grand Am 2.4 timing question, intake cam, pontiac grand am

Question
I changed the water pump.  I couldn't get the shoe off and followed the book on retiming.  I first put the chain on the exhaust cam then over the water pump then the crank (Now the tensioner was off at this time) then got it on the intake cam. The crank is at tdc and the pins go in smoothly and I turned the crank two times clockwise and the pins still go in smoothly.  I put the tensioner on and decided to check one more time and I turned the crank two more times clockwise and the pins went in smoothly but I am concerned that the chain looks lose facing the engine on the right side of the crank.  I am thinking that when I put the chain on the exhaust cam and then the water pump and then over the shoe (but without the tensioner in place) then the crank gear that there was to much slack in the chain from the crank to the intake cam and I am worried that it will throw the chain.  Should I tear off the shoe, and put a new one on after being sure all of the slack is off of the right side of the crank gear and up above where the shoe goes.  It just seems it should be tight.  Am I overly concerned?  I don't know if I can get the shoe at a parts store or is it a dealer item which means bookoo bucks.

Answer
Hi Dennis:

the chain is streached out. get a new chain and also a new shoe for the tensioner. the pins should slide in smooth and no slack in the chain between the 2 cams. Once the chain is on the ninstall the three plastic guides into the housung there willne a bit of slack where you mentioned but that is what the guides do take up the slack. Good luck :0
