Pontiac Repair: 04 grand am gt ignition, lmap, factory security

Question
hi, I own a 2004 grand am gt with 82000K.  Every once in a while I'll go to
start my car, and it will have to go through 2 ignition cycles before it fires up.
It's odd though, because it does this sporaticly, regardless of temperature or
being plugged in on cold nights. If it was a security problem, or the key chip
would the car still turn over? There are no "check engine" lights coming on,
and the car runs perfect. I'm clueless at this point.

Answer
Hi Jo:

well it depends on the year. I belive that an 04 will not crank when there is fault in the factory security system. the older ones will crank start then stall out right away. I belive in the 04 year they started with a no crank. When your will not start does it crank over? When it will not start levae the key in the "run" fosition and see if the security lmap comes on or starts to falsh if so it's a security system fault and the most likely cause is the ignition switch housing. it's the part the lock cylinder turns in. there is a sensor in the housing that goes bad. Good luck :)
