Pontiac Repair: 96 pontiac grand am, throttle plate, pontiac grand am

Question
QUESTION: I just bought this car and sometimes when i start it, i have to give it a little gas
in order for it to start, and then after i drive it, go in park, the rpm will go up
high and low, back and forth. otherwise the car drives fine, so i'm wondering
what i need to do to fix this.

ANSWER: Hi Melissa:

I'm goning to guess this has a V6 engine in it just based on what you say it's doing. I would first off have the throttle body and plate cleaned along with the idle control motor. When that is bining cleaned disconnect the battery when the cleaning is done reconnect the battery and turn the key to on but do not crank the car. then turn it off for a minute and then start the car. The first time strting it after the cleaning it will start hard but after that is should run okay. Good luck :)

QUESTION: ok what is the throttle body and plate? could you tell me were this is located?
also where would i find the idle control motor?

Answer
Sorry about that.
The throttle plate is in part that allows the air into the engine take the hose off between the air cleaner and the engine and at the engine side is the throttle plate that is what moves when you press on the gas pedal. The throotle plate moves back and forth and it get dirty from carbon. clean the throttle plate and the bore the plate sits in. The idle control motor is attached to the throttle bodt it has 1 connector on it with 4 wires disconnect the wire harness from it and take out the 2 screws that hold it in and clean the end of the motor it has tapered plug on the ned of it. also clean out the hole the motor sits in.
