did a 350 engine fit on a 305 transmission.

Yes depending on the application they did. depending on the car/truck the bolt pattern on the engine block is the same. However a transmission for a 305 engine is different then a 350 meaning the insides are a bit different ususally they are built tougher the 350 engine had more torque then a 305.
