Pontiac Repair: Sunbird module location, rear defogger, haynes manuals

Question
QUESTION: 94 Sunbird 2.0 stalled at 65mph. Speedometer went to 100 pinned and remains there. Car will not restart. I need to locate the multi function alarm module, as I think that is the problem, thanks for any help.

ANSWER: Hi John:

The multi-function chime module on that car is under the dash board to the left of the steering column it's either purple in color or tan in color I believe. I don't think that is the issue here though. The chime module shouldn't cause a stall condition. And the fact the speedo pegged I would venture to think you have an engine control computer issue or a bad power or ground feed to the module. That module is up behind the glove box on this car.

Good luck :)

QUESTION: The auto door locks had been acting up prior to the stall out, they would sometimes click and cause a no start in park. Put in neutral and it would start. The multi function alarm module I refer to shows in my Haynes manual on the power door lock diagram. It shows the speed pulse, the park-neutral switch, and the door lock outputs going threw it on the way to the ECM, thanks again

Answer
Your welcome. But the multi function alarm is not an inpout to the ecm it gets an output from it for the door locks locking in gear and I belive for the rear defogger as well. If you unplug it it may start and run if not they your going to have to look further into it. These older ones would have water leaks in the car and the water would drip right onto the module. Take a good look at the male end of the alarm where it plugs into the car. There would be a build up of corrosion in the socket where it plugs in.. Anyother FYI Haynes manuals are not all that great. look into getting a chilton or motor repair manual if your planning on keeping this car for a while.
