Pontiac Repair: 95 pontiac 3.4 engine died, pontiac gran prix, gran prix gtp

Question
I have a 95 Pontiac Gran Prix GTP with the 3.4 DOHC engine. It just quit running one day on my daughter going down the road. She was going into a sharp curve, so she wasn't on the accelerator. When I tried to start it, it would not turn over. I thought the engine was seized up. Took the spark plugs out, it turned over fine. Car has just over 200,000. I haven't torn into it to check the timing belt, etc. Any suggestions?

Answer
Hi Tim:

These enginese were noted for timing belts breaking! and especially if they have a ton of miles on them. The belts would usually go around the 70K mark. No why it wouldn't crnak over I don't know. You can take the top secions of the belt cover off and see if the belt schreaded or not. That is the first place to look. I do not belive these engines are interferance engines meaning if the belt breaks it doesn't bend valves. But I could be wrong. It could be a lot of other reasons why it quit running spark issue or fuel pump. I don't know what the the no crank and the stall have in common.. How is the battery in the car and the battery cables?
