Pontiac Repair: 2001 Firebird V6, auto parts stores, engine temp

Question
2001 firebird 3800 v6
Two problems started yesterday, temp gauge dropped to 0 and the fan runs full speed continuosly.  I replaced the temp sensor today, no change.  Thank you!

Answer
Hi Jeff:

well I think these 2 problems are related. The engine temp sensor for the computer in a round about way also controls the gauge on the dash. If there is a fault in the system "depending on the fault" open or a short in the temp sensor data to the engine computer I think the engine cooling fan defaults to run to make sure the engine doesn't overheat. not you said you changed the sneor and no change. you could have a wirning issue going to the sensor or the engine computer can be bad and not seeing the data correctly. with out the aid of a scan tool this is impossable to tell what's wrong with it. Same with the gauge The engine computer send the temp signal out to the gauge. has any service engine soon lamp come one? some of the big box auto parts stores will scan your system for free for codes etc.. give that a try. What you really need is a scan tool not a trouble code reader. Your looking for the data reading for the engine temp. Good luck :)
