Pontiac Repair: 2000 SSEI Trans., brake master cylinder, park position

Question
I used my car several times today and everything was fine. I stopped for gas and it wouldn't go into park. I tried several times, but no go. I came home tried again, no luck. Naturally key wont come out. Is it a sensor or something? I ran the car through all gears and everything else seems to be fine.

Answer
Hi Mike:

No ther is not a sensor to make it go into park. Ther is some sort of a mechanical issue going on either inside the transmission which I doubt ot it's something with the shifter cable or the floor shifter assemby. Maybe something fell into the centerconsole and it jamming the mechanism up or the cable is binding/came out of adjustment. I belive the adjustment for the cable at the trasnmission end of the cable on that yaer and model. maybe the cable jumped out of adjustment and that is why it will not go into park. You can try putting it into park your self. park the car one level ground and set the parking brake. open the hood and you will see the cable on the top of the trasnmission just below the brake master cylinder. use a screwdriver to pop the cable off the lever and try to move the lever into the park position. If it goes you know the issue is NOT in the transmission and lies else where. Good luck :)
