Pontiac Repair: 97 Montana Runs great, but stalls shifting out of Park, engine sensors, pontiac montana

Question
Hi. My 97 Pontiac montana van 3.4 V6 with 156,000 miles starts easily and runs great, but lately when I shift out of Park the oil level light comes on and it stalls out immediately. If, however, I shift into Neutral before starting the car, it will start easily and give no problems when I shift into reverse or drive. I know there's plenty of oil, so that's not the issue. It runs great and gets me where I'm going. On a few occasions when shifting out of Park it has almost stalled, but then recovered, flashing both the oil pressure and oil level lights at me for a few seconds. Transmission fluid is full. So I'm stumped. Thanks for your help!

Answer
Hi Don:

well this is a starnge one. It can be a lot of stuff. The oil level sensor could be bad or a wiring issue to that sensor. when the car is shifted into reverese it may be pulling on a wire harness and making a bad connection for the oil level sensor and other engine sensors as well. Thus the stall. You could have an issue with an idle control motor and a throttle plate and throttle bore that is carboned up. when the van is shifted into reverse the engine is put under a slightly more lod than in drive and the engine just chokes it's sleft out and dies due to the carbon build up on the parts I mentioned.. That is wher I would start. Good luck :)
