Pontiac Repair: Miss Fire, miss fire, noid light

Question
I have a 1999 Pontiac grand am with the 2.4 Quad engine. I first had a slight miss fire in the #4 cyl. I replace the spark plugs and this didn't correct it. A few days later it was missing very bad and I scaned the engine and it said that #1 and #4 were miss firing. I replace the tower coil , then both coils, boots ignition module and still a the radical miss fire. I then changed the fuel injectors from #2 and #3 to #1 and #4 and still the same miss fire in the 1 and 4 cyl. I check the injectors with a noid light and they all are firing. I checked for spark from the coil tower and all are sparking. I then did a compression test and all cyl. check good. I also checked the cam and crank sensor along with the computer and everything checks ok. I am about to lose my mind .....what is wrong with this engine????????
Thanks Jim

Answer
Hi Jim:
You said you replaced the coil tower?? Do you mean the plastic cover that the coils sit in? If not then that is what I would tell you the issue is. Usually the coild cross fire inside the cover and cause 2 cylinder to go dead 90% of the time that is the issue. 1,4 are on the same coil so it's something inside that housing that is bad or breaking down under a load when the engine is running. If all else fails go to a junk yard and get that complete cover off a junk engine and give it a try.  P.S. this doesn't have any kind of an aftermarket remote start on the car does it? if so disconnect it and see what happens.. Just a though from left field..

Good luck :)
