Pontiac Repair: heater power, fuse box, gauge wire


Question
I have no power to heater fan switch.  fan ok w/jumper.  ground ok. fuses ok. replaced relay for fan; no diff.
wire integrity ok. 97 grand am.
frustrated as hell right now.

Hi Don:

well a few things to check you said you have no power at the fan switch it's self and the fuses are okay. BUT do the fuses have power to them? That may be your issue here. if you don't have power at the fuse then I woould look for a burt up fuaseable link/maxi fuse under the hood. Possably a bad ignition switch that is not powering up part of the fuse box. If the fuse does indeed have power and it's comming out of the back of the fuse box but not at the heater control head then you have a broken wire or hight resitance in that feed I'd just cut your losses and run a wire from the back of the fuse box to the heater control head. just make sure it's the right gauge wire and that it is indeed fused so make sure you get it off the right leg of the fuse the side that is fuse protected.
