Pontiac Repair: transmission, rd gear, pontiac trans am

sir:
my daughter just got a 1992 Pontiac Trans Am with a six cylinder, automatic. the problem is that it will not shift into third gear. any suggestions?

Well first off when you say it will not shift into 3'rd gear what happens? does it hang in 2'nd or does it try to shift and then the engine revs like the gear is not there? If that's the case then 3'rd gear in the transmission is more than likely broken/burnt up. If it just does 1-2 up shift and hangd in 2'nd gear it can be a few things like a governer that is sticking or a throttle valave cable "kick down" cable is way out of adjustment or a valve in the valve body is stuck. It's hard to say but it's one of the 3 mentioned things. Out of the 3 the mosst likely cause is either a governer or a stuck valve in the valve body. Good luck :}
