Pontiac Repair: climate control on 98 grand prix gt, serial data stream, trip calculator

Question
QUESTION:  how do I switch the read out from metric to english on the climati control read out 1998 grand prix gt w/out hud or trip computer?

ANSWER: Hi Kevin:

really good question. The only answer I have for you is this. It's right out of the service manual:
Depress the MODE button, located on the trip calculator face, in order to change displayed parameter. Press the ENG/MET button on the face of the trip calculator in order to switch the display units from English to metric.

Important: The ENG/MET state output may be used by other displays in the vehicle in order to set the specific display units. The trip calculator must recall the state of the switch from the last ignition cycle.

The trip calculator performs an error detection when a serial data stream is not present for 10 seconds. If the trip calculator is not able to calculate a value, due to any missing data, the display shows a flashing 0 when the mode is selected. The trip calculator updates the display with the correct information for each mode that is selected within a given time frame. The following table indicates the recommend display rates, the allowable range for each parameter, and the reset values.

You did state that this car doesn't have a trip calculator though.. So my question is how did it get into metric reading in the first place? does the speedo read faster than it should meaning that is in metric as well or just the climate control is reading metric?

QUESTION:  yes, just the climate control is in met. I just installed an aftermarket stereo and it seemed to happen then. I really am stumped since there is no eng/met button on the climate control. when I hooked up the radio, i noticed a single black wire that was disconnected and reconnected it. Thinking that could've been the problem I disconnected it and nothing changed.....very puzzled any help would be appreciated. tnx

Answer
Very stange! I havn't ever heard of that before. What wire was disconnected? You dodn't answer my question is the speedo reading in metric as well? Or is that okay. I really am stumped on this unless the control head that is in this car was not the original one and it came out of a car that had the trip clacultor on it and that toggled the head from metric to english and the default on that control head is metric and if it were in the original car the trip computer would then have to trigger it bad to metric.. I know it's a long shot but I can't think of any reason that it would do that. you could try getting one from a junk yard that has the same option package your car has and see if that works but that me be hard to find most of the cars came with a trip computer and the auto climate control not like yours is equipped. If nothing else you are getting a crash course on the metric system.
