Pontiac Repair: Periodic no start, pontiac bonneville, gooes

Question
Todd - I have a 1992 Pontiac Bonneville 3800 (not supercharged).  After I drive the car for a while and stop, it may or may not start.  If I let it sit for 15 to 30 minutes, it usually starts right up.  However, sometimes I will be going down the road and it will just die.  About 50% of the time it will restart.  However it is the other 50% that concerns me.  I have replaced the fuel pump and the cam position sensor.  The last time it wouldn't start, I got a code 17 and a code 66 out of the computer.  I think the code 66 has to do with the A/C.  Any thoughts on this problem?  If you need more information, just let me know.  Thank You! ~ Tom

Answer
Hey Tom:
Does the code 17 set all the time or only when it will not start? If it sets all the time the issue may be from the magnet that the cam sensor uses broke off the cam gear. If it's an intermittant code that that is not the way to go. If the engine is missing a cam sensor signal it should start but it will start hard and run a bit differently. It shoudln't cause a stalling condition..... You may have a crankshaft position sesnor that is going bad in this car they are VERY common. either that or maybe a bad ground connection under the ignition module. ther is a stud that the battery ground gooes on and also the grounds for the engine computer. Take a look at that also. As for the code 66 that is for a low chagre in the a/c system that will not cause a stall either. Good luck :}
