Pontiac Repair: 97 grand am, rear defroster, auto lamps

Question
QUESTION: I have a 97 grand am when you hook battery up all parking lights and the rear defroster light come on with key off they still stay on even after i disconnect the head light switch any ideas

ANSWER: Hi Frank:

Does this car have an aftermarket alarm on it? If so it could be tied into the parking lights and keeping the lamps on. If the headlamp switch is completely disconnected the lamps should be off. The only other I dea I have is is this car is equipped with auto headlamps thjen possably the relay for the park lamp control is stuck on or the wirong to it is shorted to power causing the lamps to stay on?? Good luck :)

QUESTION: car had an alarm but it was removed and all wiring was repaired I have power to the trigger on the relay as soon as I connect the batt do you think it could be problem with the drl module?

Answer
Yes that could be the issue. On that car the DRL/auto lamps are controlled by the insterment panel cluster. that could have gone bad causing the lamps to be commanded on VIA the relay. unplug the cluster and give it a try. The big connector on it not the small 3 wire one on the side of it.
