Pontiac Repair: 1996 Pontiac Grand Am, coolant tank, overflow tube

Question
QUESTION: Todd,

I have a 1996 Pontiac Grand Am that is leaking coolant from the area on the left of the block (I think).  It is a constant leak and it began when my son overfilled the coolant.  I replaced the water pump and it still leaks.  I have checked all of the hoses and none leak.  the leak appears to be coming from the area to the left of the water pump.  Is there a gasket or seal in that area?  Thanks for the help.

ANSWER: Hi Chris what engine is in this? I'm gonna say a V6? but I'm not quite sure exactly where this could be leaking from? If the coolant was overfilled there is a overflow tube on the coolant tank if it's over filled the pressure will be to great inside the tank and the cap will vent the extra coolant/pressure out and it will run donw the side of the frame section on the right side of the car near the pump.. Aagain if this is a V^ ther is not much that leaks on the front of the engine other than the water pump it's self.

QUESTION: It is a V-6 and maybe I should clarify that the leak is in the vicinity of the pump but slightly to the left of it. It appears to be coming from the block itself.  Is there a gasket or seal that could have blown in that area?  Thanks for your quick response on the last question.  I really appreciate it.

Answer
I depends on exactly where it is. If it to the leff of the pump do you mean standing on the right side of the car and looking at the front of the engine? If so then I would suspect a front timing cover gasket may be leakingbetween the cover and the block.
. If it's to the right looking at it the same way there is not anthing there but if it's behind the pump it could be a head gasket or a lower intake gasket. It could still be from the pump area if you didn't get all the gasket cleaned off the timing cover the gasket may be leaking between the pump and cover. Like I said without seeing it I can't tell you for sure what's up with it.. Good luck :)
