Pontiac Repair: overheating, engine temp, cold car

Question
1993 pont gd prix le 3.1 litre w/air.niether of the rad fans kick in,would like to know what sensor activates fans and where it is located on motor to change it?

Answer
Hi Jeff:

The sensor of the coolnat fans it the one for the engine control module it's in the intake manifold. That may not be the issue though. If the car srats and runs fine I would douby it's the sensor. That sensor is a main input for the engine for a cold car. if it runs fine I'd doubt it's the sensor. I's start looking at fuses and relays first. Also with out the aid of a scan tool it's hard to say for sure what's going on. With a scan tool you can see what the engine computer is seeing for engine temp and wether or not the computer is commanding the relay(s) on for the fans. with out that it's really a crap shoot. The engine computer could be bad as well and not turning the relays on. Good luck :)
