Pontiac Repair: 99 Grand Am ABS, advance auto parts, advance auto parts store

Question
I just bought a 99 Grand AM to use for my second car back and forth from work.  When you first start the car, it is fine, as soon as you put it in drive to go after a few feet the ABS light comes and and the Trac off comes on and they both stay on.  What kind of problems am I looking at or is it a bad sensor or should I get it to the shop right away.  The brakes seem fine.  Also, if it needs repair, do you have any idea what kind of $$$$$$ we looking at.  The car has 124,000 on it.  Will wait for your response before I do anything.

Thanks,

Rod

Answer
Hey Rod:

Well the fact that the ABS light doesn't come on untill the car is movineg would indicate you have a bad or missing wheel speed(S)  siganl into the ABS module. The most likley cause would be a bad wheel speed sesnor in one or more of the wheel bearings.. The second likely cause would be corrosion in one or more of thw wheel speed sensor wiring harnesses or if you live in the rust belt like I do it could be a bad ABS module due to corrosion into the ABS control module harness. That is the biggest $ part there is depending on the engine in the car and wether it has varaiable assist power steering that module is almost $1,000.00. The wheel bearings are under $200.00 each. I would stop at like an Advance auto parts store or auto zone or Orielies what ever is near your home and have the abs system scanned for codes. They all do it for free and see what comes up. Good luck :)
