Pontiac Repair: theft system problems, remote car starter, remote starter

Question
Hi Todd, I have a 1996 4-door grand am se with a 2.4L twincam engine, and I've been having problems with the theft system. When I try to start the car, the engine starts but then shuts down after a couple of seconds. The theft system light stays on but not flashing. A remote car starter was installed after the car was purchased and it only has about 64,000 miles on it right now. Could the remote starter be the problem and if so, how would I fix this?
Thanks, Orlando

Answer
Hi Orlando:

Yes the remote starter is thr oot of your problem. In order to install a remote starter on that car the factory theft system was overridden. The way they override it varrys from system to system but either the weay they hooked it up or the device they used to override it failed. It need to be removed and the theft system hooked back up the way it came from from the factory. I really dislike them they cause more problems then they are worth. Just a little side note the fact that the system is over ridden means that someone can steal you car by hot wiring the ignition switch. The way it is from the factory they would need to turn the lock cylinder and hot wire it at the same time.. Just a little tid bit that no one told you about when you bought the system.
