Pontiac Repair: Fuel Problems, fuel level sensor, fuel gauge

Car runs great. The fuel gauge dose weird stuff. Like when I'm in idol, it sits anywhere between 1/4 and 1/2. Then when I'm cruzin down the road, it's at 2 marks below full. During the first 30 seconds of driving, the gauge will drop to empty and turn the fuel low light on and then ding at me. What is the problem?

Hi Randy:

it depends on what model car you have but most likely the fuel level sensor in the tank has gone bad. there is a set of metal feet that ride up and down on level sesnor and the feet wear out on the level sesnor and cause the issues you have. The gauge could be bad as well or even the computer for the engine. I would really lean towards the level sensor though. Good luck :}
