Pontiac Repair: 2001 grand prix fuel gauge, prix fuel, fuel gauge

The fuel gauge fluctuates. Is there something I need to replace to get working right again? Thanks for your help.

Hey Tim:

This is a pretty common issue with this car. The levle sensor in the tank is bad. it is a float that measure the amount of fule in the tank and there are contacts on that level that wear out from constantly moving up and down as the fule load changes in the tank. It's a pretty easy job. the level sensor and the fule pump come out through an access panel insid the trunk. pull up the carpet in the trunk and there is access panel on the floor of the trunk back the the back seat. remove that panel and the fuel pump assembly comes out through there.
